22:1
לַ֭מְנַצֵּחַ עַל־אַיֶּ֥לֶת הַשַּׁ֗חַר
To the Director of Music,
Set lyrics onto ‘Doe of the Pre-dawn Twilight’;
מִזְמ֥וֹר לְדָוִֽד׃
A Psalm of David.
22:2
אֵלִ֣י אֵ֭לִי לָמָ֣ה עֲזַבְתָּ֑נִי
“My God, My God,
For what reason have You left Me —
רָח֥וֹק מִֽ֝ישׁוּעָתִ֗י
Far away from My deliverance —
דִּבְרֵ֥י שַׁאֲגָתִֽי׃
far away from the words of My groaning!?”
22:3
אֱֽלֹהַ֗י אֶקְרָ֣א י֭וֹמָם וְלֹ֣א תַעֲנֶ֑ה
“My God, I call out by day,
and you do not answer;
וְ֝לַ֗יְלָה
And by night,
וְֽלֹא־דֽוּמִיָּ֥ה לִֽי׃
And for me there is no quietness;”
22:4
וְאַתָּ֥ה קָד֑וֹשׁ
“But You are Holy:
י֝וֹשֵׁ֗ב
Who inhabits
תְּהִלּ֥וֹת יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
Israel’s songs of praise!”
22:5
בְּ֭ךָ בָּטְח֣וּ אֲבֹתֵ֑ינוּ
“In You have our fathers trusted;
בָּ֝טְח֗וּ
They were confident,
וַֽתְּפַלְּטֵֽמוֹ׃
And You delivered them;”
22:6
אֵלֶ֣יךָ זָעֲק֣וּ וְנִמְלָ֑טוּ
“To You they cried out and they escaped;
בְּךָ֖ בָטְח֣וּ וְלֹא־בֽוֹשׁוּ׃
In You they trusted and they were not disappointed;”
22:7
וְאָנֹכִ֣י תוֹלַ֣עַת וְלֹא־אִ֑ישׁ
“But I am a blood-coloured worm and not a person;
חֶרְפַּ֥ת אָ֝דָ֗ם
The scorn of mankind,
וּבְז֥וּי עָֽם׃
And being despised by people;”
22:8
כָּל־רֹ֭אַי יַלְעִ֣גוּ לִ֑י
“All those seeing me,
they mock me;
יַפְטִ֥ירוּ בְ֝שָׂפָ֗ה
they let go the lip,
יָנִ֥יעוּ רֹֽאשׁ׃
They shake the head;”
22:9
גֹּ֣ל אֶל־יְהוָ֣ה יְפַלְּטֵ֑הוּ
‘Move away to the LORD – let Him bring him out;
יַ֝צִּילֵ֗הוּ
Let Him snatch him away,
כִּ֘י חָ֥פֵֽץ בּֽוֹ׃
Since He delighted in him!’
22:10
כִּֽי־אַתָּ֣ה גֹחִ֣י מִבָּ֑טֶן
“In that You burst me forth from the belly;
מַ֝בְטִיחִ֗י
Inspiring me with confidence,
עַל־שְׁדֵ֥י אִמִּֽי׃
At the breasts of my mother:”
22:11
עָ֭לֶיךָ הָשְׁלַ֣כְתִּי מֵרָ֑חֶם
“On Your account I was cast from the womb;
מִבֶּ֥טֶן אִ֝מִּ֗י
From the belly of my mother;
אֵ֣לִי אָֽתָּה׃
You are My God;”
22:12
אַל־תִּרְחַ֣ק מִ֭מֶּנִּי כִּי־צָרָ֣ה קְרוֹבָ֑ה
“Be not far from me,
Because dire need is at hand;
כִּי־אֵ֥ין עוֹזֵֽר׃
For there is no one helping;”
22:13
סְ֭בָבוּנִי פָּרִ֣ים רַבִּ֑ים
“Many bulls have surrounded me;
אַבִּירֵ֖י בָשָׁ֣ן כִּתְּרֽוּנִי׃
The mighty ones of the snake have encircled me;”

22:14
פָּצ֣וּ עָלַ֣י פִּיהֶ֑ם
“They opened their mouths against me:
אַ֝רְיֵ֗ה
Like a lion,
טֹרֵ֥ף וְשֹׁאֵֽג׃
Tearing and roaring;”
22:15
כַּמַּ֥יִם נִשְׁפַּכְתִּי֮ וְהִתְפָּֽרְד֗וּ
“Like water I was poured out,
and they have unjointed themselves,—
כָּֽל־עַצְמ֫וֹתָ֥י
all of my bones;
הָיָ֣ה לִ֭בִּי כַּדּוֹנָ֑ג
My heart has become like wax;—
נָ֝מֵ֗ס
It has collapsed,—
בְּת֣וֹךְ מֵעָֽי׃
In the midst of my intestines;”
22:16
יָ֘בֵ֤שׁ כַּחֶ֨רֶשׂ ׀ כֹּחִ֗י
“My strength has dried up like earthenware,
וּ֭לְשׁוֹנִי מֻדְבָּ֣ק מַלְקוֹחָ֑י
And my tongue is being stuck to my palate;
וְֽלַעֲפַר־מָ֥וֶת תִּשְׁפְּתֵֽנִי׃
And You are setting me to become particulate death matter;”
22:17
כִּ֥י סְבָב֗וּנִי
“For they have gathered round Me,
כְּלָ֫בִ֥ים
Dogs,
עֲדַ֣ת מְ֭רֵעִים הִקִּיפ֑וּנִי
The assembly of evildoers,
they have surrounded Me;
כָּ֝אֲרִ֗י
According to lionlike ferocity
piercing through and binding, —
יָדַ֥י וְרַגְלָֽי׃
My hands and My feet;”

And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands?
Then he shall answer,
Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.
22:18
אֲסַפֵּ֥ר כָּל־עַצְמוֹתָ֑י
“I can count all My bones;
הֵ֥מָּה יַ֝בִּ֗יטוּ
They are looking,
יִרְאוּ־בִֽי׃
gazing at Me!”
22:19
יְחַלְּק֣וּ בְגָדַ֣י לָהֶ֑ם
“They are dividing My clothing for themselves;
וְעַל־לְ֝בוּשִׁ֗י
And for My garment,
יַפִּ֥ילוּ גוֹרָֽל׃
They are casting a lot!”

וְאַתָּ֣ה יְ֭הוָה אַל־תִּרְחָ֑ק
“But You O LORD, do not become distant!
אֱ֝יָלוּתִ֗י
O My Divine Help!
לְעֶזְרָ֥תִי חֽוּשָׁה׃
Hasten Thou to My aid!”
22:21
הַצִּ֣ילָה מֵחֶ֣רֶב נַפְשִׁ֑י
“Rescue my life from the dagger;
מִיַּד־כֶּ֝֗לֶב
From the power of the dog;
יְחִידָתִֽי׃
O My Only One!”
22:22
ה֭וֹשִׁיעֵנִי מִפִּ֣י אַרְיֵ֑ה
“ ‘Save me from the mouth of the lion!’
וּמִקַּרְנֵ֖י רֵמִ֣ים עֲנִיתָֽנִי׃
Then away from the powers of wild bulls You responded to me! ”
22:23
אֲסַפְּרָ֣ה שִׁמְךָ֣ לְאֶחָ֑י
“I shall declare Your Name to My brethren;
בְּת֖וֹךְ קָהָ֣ל אֲהַלְלֶֽךָּ׃
In the midst of the Assembly I shall praise Thee;”

יִרְאֵ֤י יְהוָ֨ה ׀ הַֽלְל֗וּהוּ
“In reverential awe of the LORD —
Praise ye Him;
כָּל־זֶ֣רַע יַעֲקֹ֣ב כַּבְּד֑וּהוּ
Honour Him, all ye offspring of Jacob:
וְג֥וּרוּ מִ֝מֶּ֗נּוּ
And so be ye awestruck on account of Him,
כָּל־זֶ֥רַע יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
All ye offspring of Israel!”
22:25
כִּ֤י לֹֽא־בָזָ֨ה וְלֹ֪א שִׁקַּ֡ץ עֱנ֬וּת עָנִ֗י
For He did not despise nor abhor the affliction of the poor,
וְלֹא־הִסְתִּ֣יר פָּנָ֣יו מִמֶּ֑נּוּ
Neither did He hide His face from him:
וּֽבְשַׁוְּע֖וֹ אֵלָ֣יו שָׁמֵֽעַ׃
But when he was crying for help to Him, He hearkened;
